The Montessori Day School of Brooklyn serves children ages 2 years through 5 years, divided into toddler and primary/mixed age classes. The school has a total of seven classrooms. Each class is led by a team of three teachers, with class sizes appropriate to the ages of the children. Classroom calendars are distributed monthly to parents identifying the themes, special projects, and daily activities for the month. Using Montessori principles, our dedicated, experienced teachers create an environment that is both nurturing and educationally stimulating for the children. Teachers work together so that as children pass through the classes during their years at MDS, they build on their experiences in each classroom.
The "toddler" classes include twos and "new twos," i.e. those who may begin program on their second birthdays in September, October, or even November. Two of our seven classrooms are twos rooms, while other mostly threes classes can include some children who turn three in the fall. The maximum group size for classes of majority two-year-olds is twelve, and for threes it's fifteen; three adults are assigned to each classroom, exceeding ratio requirements. The Penguins and the Hummingbirds classrooms accommodate most of the school's two-year-olds.
The primary classes have mixed-age groups (i.e., 3 to 5 years of age), following the Montessori model in which young children learn from older ones and older children reinforce their learning by helping the younger children. In addition to our Montessori-focused curriculum, we also have an exciting array of enrichment activities.
Depending on availability, we offer several scheduling options including full days (8am to 3pm) and extended days (3pm to 4, 5 or 6pm). Extended day is available for full-week students (attending Monday through Friday) or part-week students (attending Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday).
