The Montessori Day School of Brooklyn serves children ages 2 years through 6 years, divided into toddler and preschool/kindergarten classes.
The school has a total of seven classrooms. Each class is led by a team of three teachers, with the ratio of teacher to child as appropriate for the ages of the children in each class.
The toddler classes (twos and young threes) group children who are close in age; the preschool/kindergarten classes have mixed-age groups (i.e., 3 to 6 years of age) following the Montessori model where young children learn from older ones and older children reinforce their learning by helping the younger children.
Classroom calendars are distributed monthly to parents identifying the themes, special projects and daily activities for the month. Using Montessori principles, our dedicated, experienced teachers create an environment that is both nurturing and educationally stimulating for the children. Teachers work together so that as children pass through the classes during their years at MDS, they build on their experiences in each classroom.
In addition to the full curriculum, we also have an exciting array of enrichment activities. Our children enjoy Spanish, music, yoga and movement, as well as swimming, and soccer during the summer months. Weekday piano classes with instructors from The Piano School of Brooklyn are also offered throughout the year at an additional cost. Weekend foreign language classes with instructors from Brooklyn Beanstalks (www.brooklynbeanstalks.com) are available at an additional cost.
In addition to field trips to institutions throughout the city, the school is able to take advantage of its close proximity to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum of Art with frequent trips to these local treasures.
As a convenience to families, MDS offers a day camp for students during the Mid-Winter break in Februay and Spring break in April when the school is closed for an additional fee.
We have numerous scheduling options including full days (8am to 4pm) and extended days (8am to 6pm). Both of these schedules are available for a full-time program (5 days a week) or part-time program (3 or 2 days a week). The part-time options vary from class to class depending on the availability of spaces.
